Overhead Gantry Crane

Course Aims 

The aim of this course is to teach delegates how to safely operate the overhead crane in accordance with the Manufacturers’ Manual and have the knowledge and skills required to recognise equipment deficiencies when conducting required inspections. This course will also ensure that delegates use the appropriate controls, lifting tackle and appropriate communications and signals. It will also teach delegates how to maintain safety and become the first line of defence in accident avoidance. 

Course Outcomes 

Upon completion, delegates will receive a Prontoport In House Certificate of Competence. The certification is valid for 3 years. 

Duration: 3 days for Novices and 1 day for Refresher 

Prerequisites:  reasonably fit, both physically and mentally with the learning ability and potential to become competent operators.

  • Health & Safety at Work Regulations 

  • Lifting gear regulations 

  • Operating the crane safely in accordance with the manufacturers handbook

  • Safe Systems of Work

  • Introduction to the controls

  • Pre-start checks

  • Estimate/determine the weight of loads/centre of gravity

  • Calculation of angles and tensions 

  • Procedures for dealing with damaged or faulty equipment 

  • Completion of pre-use inspection 

  • Correct shutdown procedures 

  • Isolating faulty equipment/procedures for fault reporting 

  • Attaching lifting equipment to slings 

  • Use appropriate crane signals and communications 

  • Emergency procedures 

  • Basic slinging techniques 

  • Controlling hook swing 

  • Weight assessment and capacities
