GWO Manual Handling

Course Aims 

The aim of this Module is to encourage positive Manual Handling behaviour and train delegates’ ability to perform Manual Handling tasks in a safe manner in the wind turbine industry/environment. The training shall be designed to improve and refresh Delegates’ awareness through both theoretical knowledge and practical training. The main focus shall be on practicing correct techniques.   

Course Outcomes 

Upon completion, delegates will receive a GWO accreditation.  This information will be uploaded onto the delegates WINDA Account. The certification is valid for 2 years. 

Prontoport also offer refresher training for Manual Handling. Please note, however, a delegate is only allowed to attend a refresher course in the specific Training Module prior to the date of expiry on the current certificate or training records. If a certificate or training record is expired, the Delegate must attend the full Basic Safety Training Module(s) to obtain a new training record. 

Duration: 2 days or 1 day for a Manual Handling Refresher course 


There are no prerequisites for this course, however, delegates must be physically fit enough to attend and carry out the practical element of the course. 

Course Content and Key Activities 

  • General health and safety duties of employers to their employees 

  • Personal responsibilities of employees and the self-employed 

  • Overview of relevant legislation 

  • Incident and injury reporting

  • Hazards and risks associated with manual handling

  • Fundamental principles of spinal anatomy, and potential physiological injuries

  • Equipment pre and post use checks, including certification of equipment

  • Risk assessments and control measures for manual handling in wind turbines

  • Housekeeping risks relevant to for manual handling in wind turbines 

  • Planning of operations involving manual handling in wind turbines 

  • The benefit and value of warm up and stretching 

  • Environmental factors (e.g. weather)
